Local leaders react to North America’s winning bid for 2026 World Cup

Sidney Guerrero | 13 June, 2018, 23:17

The United States, Canada, and Mexico have won out over Morocco in a joint bid to host FIFA's 2026 World Cup, reports Sports Illustrated.

FIFA.com has been counting down the last 100 days until the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ with interesting facts from the history of the competition. The United States is likely to have 10 cities selected to host games, while Mexico and Canada are expected to each have three.

The United States proposed staging 60 out of the 80 games at the 2026 World Cup, the first edition of the tournament that will include 48 teams. For instance, Los Angeles may host the US opener, Dallas is mentioned as a candidate to host the semifinals, while the final match is expected to take place in Met Life Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, just outside of New York City.

The final North American host cities could be announced as late as 2021, according to the statement.

"What can really be the legacy, whether we host matches or are just involved with this in some other grand scheme, that can make sure that Baltimore and the state of Maryland have maximized the potential of being a part of the World Cup?"

Cordeiro claimed the 2026 World Cup will generate $14 billion in revenue - that is an $11 billion profit for Federation Internationale de Football Association.

Trump renews attack on OPEC ahead of group's production meeting
Prior to Trump's April tweet, the price of oil had soared from $50 a barrel last fall to over $70. The cartel is meeting next week, where it will consider pulling back from the deal.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino (R) poses for a picture with officials after the announcement, that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, during the 68th FIFA Congress in Moscow, Russia June 13, 2018. In all likelihood, 11 of the 17 proposed USA sites will make the cut. Like Canada, Japan had previously qualified for only one World Cup. And perhaps most persuasive, the North American bid promised Federation Internationale de Football Association a record $11 billion in profit, almost double the $6.6 billion that governing body expects to earn in the 2022 event in Qatar and more than double the $5 billion estimated by Morocco. The United Bid featured a youth team player from each of the three nations, beginning with a moving tale by 17-year-old Canadian Alphonso Davies, the current Major League Soccer player of the week, about how his family had been welcomed after fleeing civil war in Africa.

All of these on their own are excellent reasons why hopefully we can persuade the 24 voters on the Fifa Executive Committee in December to award England this great prize.

Even if Trump were to be elected for a second four-year term in 2020 he would not be in office when the World Cup kicks off in 2026. Seventeen American cities remain in the running to host games, while Canada (Edmonton, Montreal, Toronto) and Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey) have just three cities each in contention.

The three hosts were all expected to qualify automatically for the tournament as has been the tradition for host nations.

Starting in 2026, there will be 16 groups of three teams, with the top two teams in the group advancing into the expanded round-of-32 knockout stages. FIFA said in May 2017 that the question will be answered by the FIFA Council at a later date, and no decision was made on Wednesday.
