One of the hostages is reportedly a pregnant woman, and another is "severely injured", according to a witness.

"Two hostages, including one who had petrol poured on them", have been freed police said. A Paris police official told CBS News there was no immediate indication of a link to terrorism, however members of the force's elite serious crime unit, known as the BRI, were on the scene. The information could not be officially confirmed.

Dozens of police officers converged in an area of central Paris on Tuesday in response to a "hostage taking" situation by an armed man, police sources said.

The man has asked to be put in contact with the Iranian embassy.

One thing hampering the search is divers can't go into the water until the alligator is captured, Engle said. A passerby saw Matsuki's with her dogs near the shoreline about 9:45 a.m.

The area around the incident in the 10th arrondissement of Paris was ringed off by police.

Crowds of bystanders were held back by a security perimeter at the site, where police and rescue workers were massed, deploying at least one remote-controlled robot on tracks toward the building where the armed man had barricaded himself. Video on BFM-TV showed a demining device for bombs at the scene.

Negotiations with the suspect were taking place, according to an Interior Ministry official who couldn't be identified because the operation was in progress.
