Thomas takes Dauphine lead as Martin wins stage

Briton Thomas takes Dauphine lead as Ireland's Martin wins stage Team Sky’s Thomas wins Criterium

It was Thomas' second World Tour stage race win after he won Paris-Nice in 2016.

Thomas added to ITV: "I always felt in control, I always felt pretty good, but I didn't want to get too carried away (on the final climb)".

"I don't think it's quite sunk in yet, but I'm really happy to have finished the job".

"Ive been feeling good all year", the Irishman said after the race. It's easy to underestimate how far there is to go and I didn't want to go too early, die off, and lose time.

"I can rest a little bit now and wait for July".

It came on a 110 kilometres stage from Frontenex which is nearly a carbon copy of this year's Tour de France stage 11. The guys rode really well for me.

Yates said: "The Tour de France has been my main goal for the whole season".

But it did give Thomas the chance to lead Team Sky.

"It's been a learning process starting in a new team so getting this win for UAE is great", he said. I get to ride the races I want and I am a leader in a lot of them.

"Hopefully the authorities can just get their act together and have a decision, but I've got 100 per cent faith in him".

England's Adam Yates, who's twin Simon wore the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia for 13 stages in May, was third on the day at 15 seconds. "Romain Bardet was trying to overtake me in the GC but every time I responded".

Bardet had started the day in third overall, and repeatedly attacked the British duo in a bid to upgrade his podium finish, but - even after Thomas twice had to chase back following ill-timed punctures - he could not shed his GC rivals.
