When U.S. President Donald Trump sat down to make the case for peace to North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, he rolled out what amounted to a movie trailer starring the two leaders.
"China has consistently held that sanctions are not the goal in themselves", Geng said at a daily briefing.
At the time, Trump's daughter Ivanka was officially visiting South Korea, as was Gina Haspel, the then deputy Central Intelligence Agency chief, and Andrew Kim, the head of the CIA's Korea Mission Center.
A few other conservatives expressed dismay at seeing the United States and North Korean flags side-by-side, and viewed Mr Trump's solicitous manner and warm words for Mr Kim as too much, given his nation's history of human rights violations.
Having acknowledged that the U.S. -DPRK summit-the first in history-was an epochal event of great significance in overcoming decades of tensions and hostilities between the two countries and for the opening up of a new future, President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un commit to implement the stipulations in this joint statement fully and expeditiously.
Geng dismissed accusations from Trump that Beijing has been easing up on the sanctions, saying it is following United Nations sanctions "comprehensively, accurately and strictly".
Conservative House Republicans were unrepentant in their praise for the president for engaging with North Korea, a sharp reversal from many of their views on similar negotiations between President Barack Obama's Secretary of State John Kerry and Iran.
The two clasped hands for a long while Tuesday as they posed for photos in front of a row of US and North Korean flags.
At one point, it features a montage with babies and vehicle factories, suggesting what a more prosperous future for North Korea could look like if it agreed to give up its nuclear arsenal.
The meeting was the first time a sitting USA president has met North Korea's leader. Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people - the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide.
Nor does it detail plans for North Korea to demolish a missile engine testing site, a concession Trump said he'd won, or Trump's promise to end military exercises in the South while negotiations between the USA and the North continue.
Many lawmakers from both parties, while unready to declare the summit a diplomatic victory or defeat, remained skeptical the US could successfully negotiate a deal toward peace with Kim - but are letting the process play out.
Trump declared he and Kim had developed "a very special bond". The former refers to dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapon capability, while the latter can include the eventual elimination of the US nuclear umbrella on the Korean Peninsula.
But in the past, Mr Trump has been far more critical of Mr Kim's human rights record, claiming the dictator is leading one of the most brutal regimes in the world.
The camera then panned to Kim who listened to the translation - and his reaction about their weight was utterly priceless. Suspending the "war games" could harm US security interests in the region, which would create tension between the USA and its allies. For his part, Kim hailed the "historic meeting" and said they "decided to leave the past behind".
"She doesn't try to be the star of the show, she says in the background", said Aum, who worked with Lee in high-level negotiations involving the U.S. Defense Department. The longtime property developer-turned-politician later mused about the potential value of condos on the country's beachfront real estate.
