Trump declares North Korea 'no longer a nuclear threat'

US offers 'unique' guarantees to North Korea on eve of summit North Korean Denuclearisation To Start After Document Is Signed

North Korean state media highlighted President Donald Trump's concessions on war games, while lauding the Singapore summit with their leader Kim Jong Un and the US president, Reuters reported Tuesday.

At a news conference wrapping up the summit, Trump told reporters he and Kim "have developed a very special bond".

Only a few months ago, Kim and Trump were swapping personal insults such as "dotard" and "little rocket man" and the North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test, as well as firing missiles over Japan. The president would not elaborate on these hazy measures of time. "President (Barack) Obama said that North Korea was our biggest and most unsafe problem.

There were worries, especially in Tokyo and Seoul, which have huge US military presences, about Trump agreeing to halt USA military exercises with South Korea, which the North has long claimed were invasion preparations.

Trump hailed the summit in Singapore with Kim, in which the the North Korean leader agreed to work towards denuclearizing his country, although their agreement did not say how this would be done.

Echoing North Korean language, Mr Trump described the military exercises as "very provocative".

China has repeatedly called for a "freeze-for-freeze" or "dual suspension" initiative, in North Korea suspends its nuclear program in exchange for the US and South Korea to suspend their joint military exercises in the region.

"Kim Jong-un and Trump had the shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", KCNA said. He did not elaborate on the timeline, but suggested it wouldn't be soon, saying, "They'll come off when we know we're down the road".

As Trump acknowledged that denuclearisation would not be accomplished overnight, the North suggested on Wednesday that Trump had moved away from his demand for complete denuclearisation before USA sanctions on the long-isolated country are removed.

Without any prior warning, Trump announced he will be suspending the annual U.S. In return, Trump has promised to stop US military drills in South Korea.

In a joint declaration following their meeting in Singapore on Tuesday, the North Korean leader pledged to move toward complete denuclearization and Trump vowed to guarantee the security of the United States' old foe.

Setting out the United States position before the summit, Pompeo stressed that the Trump administration would only accept complete denuclearisation of the North.

Using the military exercises as a massive negotiating chip in exchange for the North denuclearizing is a pretty orthodox policy proposal, but it stunned nearly everybody that Trump seemed to be giving this away for free after his meeting.

US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Mr Trump's cost reasoning for halting the exercises was "ridiculous".

It's an appalling reality, but that's the world we live in so I suppose we need to show gratitude when two leaders are willing to agree not to annihilate each other's populations #ThankyouforNotNukingUs.

Senator Bob Corker said on Tuesday that he wanted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to brief senators on the substance of what the two nations discussed, including whether U.S. troops stationed on the Korean Peninsula would remain. Even if this meeting doesn't lead to any breakthroughs - and there's good reason to be skeptical of that - a future U.S. president may be glad that Trump threw away that old rule book and gave him or her a freer hand.

Jung was among a group of defectors that met with the president in the White House after his State of the Union address, in which Trump called the Kim government a "depraved" and "cruel dictatorship". "They did not record it".
