Trump Declares North Korea ‘No Longer a Nuclear Threat’

Unprecedented meeting seen as a path to world peace Trump claims N. Korea no longer nuclear threat, tells Americans to "sleep well"

Though North Korea still has the all of warheads and missile systems it had before Donald Trump sat down with dictator Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday, POTUS this morning tweet-boasted "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".

Is this summit a game-changer for Asia and the rest of the world? Add North Korea as an interest to stay up to date on the latest North Korea news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

It appears even Trump was unclear on whether there was any record of his 40-minute talk with Kim.

There was, at times, a surreal quality to the carefully staged, five-hour meeting of two men who had been threatening each other with nuclear war and insulting each other's mental and physical attributes just months before.

Trump also said in a separate tweet that North Korea is "no longer" the US' "biggest and most unsafe problem", telling Americans and the rest of the world they can "sleep well tonight!"

Pompeo was in Seoul on Wednesday to brief South Korean officials on the summit.

Without any prior warning, Trump announced he will be suspending the annual U.S.

"Well, I think can you ensure anything?"

Pompeo was scheduled to travel next to Beijing before returning to Washington.

After almost five hours of unprecedented talks between Trump and Kim on Tuesday, the two leaders signed a document in which Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" and the United States agreed to "provide security guarantees".

The Scottish government claims this could prevent it from passing its own laws in these areas for seven years. But Scottish Conservative MP Kirstene Hair decried the SNP's actions.

Trump's embrace of Kim in pursuit of denuclearization has left North Korean defectors and human rights advocates like Jung Gwang-il feeling abandoned.

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterized by bloodshed and threats.

North Korea still has nuclear weapons.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters traveling with him in Seoul that he was "confident" North Korea understood there will be in-depth verification of the dismantling of its nuclear program.

Experts have argued that the Trump-Kim statement fell short of achieving meaningful action towards denuclearization.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on Wednesday that Trump expressed his intention to halt US-South Korea joint military exercises, offer security guarantees to the North and lift sanctions against it as relations improve. Mr. Trump finally acknowledged.

As foreign policy analysts try to predict the next steps after President Trump's historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Tuesday, they're running into a problem: the two leaders can't seem to provide a consistent account of what they agreed to in Singapore. Trump showed off his new tattoo. It's true that Kim responded with heated attacks, and the rhetoric escalated on both sides, but the American president shouldn't be elevating a despot like Kim in the first place and further instigating confrontation.

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind", Kim said as he and Trump signed the joint statement, adding, "The world will see a major change". He met for almost an hour at the air base with Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, before heading by motorcade to Seoul.

There are usually two sets of exercises every year, in spring and autumn, involving a massive number of troops and military hardware.
