Trump says Canadian leader Justin Trudeau 'learned' from trade comments

2018 G7 Summit far from harmonious Trump advisers slam Trudeau's 'betrayal' days before Kim summit

"Canada is very clear", Freeland said.

Those comments came after Trudeau's closing news conference at the G7 summit in Quebec on Saturday, when the prime minister said he had pushed back against the Trump administration's tariffs on steel and aluminum.

The back-and-forth between Trump and Trudeau highlights the growing tensions between the USA and some the country's closest allies.

"We will stand shoulder to shoulder with the prime minister and the people of Canada", said Doug Ford, the newly-elected anti-tax premier of Ontario and brother to the late crack-smoking mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford. "We must put the American worker first!"

Mulroney, who has a personal relationship with Trump and has been quietly advising the prime minister on how to deal with the mercurial US president, likened Trump's weekend tirade to "serious summer squalls".

"The important thing for the Americans to understand is that our economies and industries are highly integrated" and that tariffs would be very bad for both sides, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"The president will continue to say what he says", he said of Trump.

President Trump, meanwhile, was not as kind, accusing Trudeau of "false statements" in a tweet.

In a pair of tweets, Trump lashed out at his G-7 host, accusing its leader of being dishonest and weak and contending that Canada had taken advantage of USA interests.

Castaldo flat out says, "It's not something I would have done or wanted to have been a part of". Trump also admitted, as shown in video from C-SPAN, that he could be wrong about North Korea.

"I've never seen language like this, the least of all from subordinates of the president directed at the prime minister of their greatest friend and ally".

After bashing Trudeau and the other attendees, President Trump's top economic advisor actually took to CNN Sunday morning, claiming Prime Minister Trudeau "stabbed" America "in the back".

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday", Navarro said: "There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump". "We used fact-based arguments".

"Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade anymore".

Without any resolution, Trudeau has promised to impose retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other U.S. products by Canada Day.

"Canada does not conduct its diplomacy through ad hominem attacks".

In Ontario, home to many vehicle plants that would be hit by USA tariffs, Conservative leader Andrew Scheer warned that NAFTA and the cause of free trade itself is now at stake.

Trudeau was away from the House of Commons on a "personal" day on Monday.
