The Lords amendment would have given parliament the power to decide what happened next, with the possibility of going back to the negotiating table or even staying in the bloc.

The Brexit Secretary warned that the UK's entire approach to negotiations with the EU is at risk of being undermined by amendments to its flagship EU Withdrawal bill.

The European Union Withdrawal Bill, a complex piece of legislation meant to disentangle Britain from four decades of EU rules and regulations, has had a rocky ride through Parliament.

Senior Remainer Dominic Grieve said Mrs May promised to table amendments in the House of Lords which will address their concerns. The government fears a weakened negotiating position.

They believe that if there is no Brexit deal by the end of November, the government must clear its next course of action with MPs.

Mid Norfolk MP George Freeman had earlier indicated he was not sure how he would vote on the question of whether parliament should get a final say on the Brexit deal.

In Tuesday's key vote, the government headed off a potential Conservative backbench rebellion and the vote passed by 324 votes to 298.

In a painful blow the the PM, Remain-supporting MP Philip Lee quit as justice minister this morning, saying he could not support "how our country's exit from the European Union looks set to be delivered".

Her fellow Conservative backbencher Stephen Hammond said: "Parliament must be able to have its say in a "no deal" situation".

Further clashes were expected on Wednesday during debate on amendments relating to how closely Britain stays aligned with the EU's economy after leaving.

Details of the government's commitment will have to be formalised next week in a new amendment to the bill. "But if we face the prospect of a "meaningless process" rather than a "meaningful vote", Parliament will be enraged".

Speaking to reporters outside the meeting, Solicitor General Robert Buckland confirmed the Government was in discussions with rebels about establishing a fresh amendment committing to seek a customs arrangement - not a union - with the EU.

Matthew Pennycook, one of the opposition Labour Party's Brexit policy team, urged lawmakers to vote to hand parliament more powers.

A paper laying out the UK government position, due to be published this month, has been delayed because the Cabinet can not agree on a united stance.

Mrs May's divided Cabinet has yet to settle on what sort of customs deal Britain should have with the European Union or how it will deal with the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Parliamentary debates about complex legal amendments rarely rouse much heat, but passions run high over anything to do with Brexit.

The Sun had a frontpage of British icons including Stonehenge, a fish and chip shop, a London bus and a football, saying "Great Britain or Great Betrayal".

It featured a British flag and the headline: "Ignore the will of the people at your peril".

Ukip leader Gerard Batten said: "The only "meaningful vote" was the verdict of the people in referendum of 23rd June 2016".

'They want us to deliver on Brexit and build a brighter future for Britain as we take back control of our money, our laws and our borders'.
