USA, Canada and Mexico win bid to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

"Thank you for entrusting us with this privilege, the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", an emotional US Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro said on stage after the vote.

In a historic vote held in Moscow on Wednesday, the "United Bid" of Canada, Mexico and the United States beat out Morocco to win the right to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the first time that worldwide soccer's marquee event will touch down on Canadian soil.

Mexico will once again enjoy itself this summer, as the 2018 tournament prepares to kick off on Thursday, but there has been a bitter taste in many Americans' mouths since the U.S. Men's National Team's failure in the build up to Russian Federation.

The 2026 World Cup will be the fourth men's World Cup hosted in North America, with Mexico hosting it in 1970 and 1986 and the United States previously hosting it in 1994.

Listed below are the countries that placed votes for Morocco and North America. Canada has never held the competition, but it did host the 2015 Women's World Cup. Whether FIFA also extends this courtesy to Mexico and Canada - the latter a relative nonentity in global soccer that has qualified for just one World Cup in 1986 - remains to be seen.

The Egyptian national team have continued their preparations in their training camp in Grozny, Russia ahead of their opening game against Uruguay on June 15 in the 2018 World Cup's Group A.

Putin said this while welcoming delegates from more than 200 countries at the FIFA Congress at Moscow's Expocentre. The U.S. will host 60 of the 80 matches, including the final, scheduled for MetLife Stadium outside New York City.

The current blueprint calls for Canada and Mexico to stage 10 games each with the US hosting 60.

Just to add to the complexity, there was a third option for all voters: neither Morocco or United and we would have had to start a new bidding process.

Victor Montagliani, the Canadian who leads CONCACAF, wants the host nations to take three of the qualification slots reserved for the region.

Both bids made their final appeals to UEFA voters in Moscow on Tuesday, with Morocco and United expected to get a vast show of support from their respective confederations. "Our cities are ready to host today", said John Kristick, executive director of the United Bid Committee.

The US lost out on the 2022 tournament to Qatar, the award of which has been mired by corruption allegations that started a chain of events leading to the downfall of former Federation Internationale de Football Association president Sepp Blatter.

Prior to the vote, Peter Montopoli, general secretary of the Canadian Soccer Association and Canada's bid director, called the vote a "watershed moment" and a "game-changer".

Nine of the 14 stadiums included in Morocco's bid were yet to be built, while the remaining five required "significant renovation or upgrading". Canada, for their part, has eight years to prepare a men's team worthy of their place at the party.
