Bruce Heyman, the former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, on Monday slammed Donald Trump's treatment of Justin Trudeau, and Canada in general, demanding the president apologize for his surrogate's claim there's a "special place in hell" for people like the Canadian prime minister.

Note that Navarro expressed regret only for the language, not the message, which is that Trudeau had better show President Trump more deference in the future.

Trump says he watched Trudeau's news conference on Air Force One on his way to Singapore and was upset because he thought he and Trudeau had had a positive meeting in Charlevoix.

"I will always protect Canadian workers and Canadian interests", Mr Trudeau said.

Addressing the feud between his administration and Canada, Trump said at a news conference Tuesday in Singapore that Trudeau had "learned" his lesson.

Following Trump's departure from the G7 summit, Trudeau said in a press conference that he told the USA president that his steel and aluminum tariffs were "kind of insulting", that Canada "will not be pushed around" and that it would not hesitate to impose retaliatory measures. "I had a very good meeting with the G-7".

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", the statement said, which came despite Washington appearing intent on taking more punitive steps on trade.

Musk referenced "a company-wide restructuring", which was reported last month by Electrek . Tesla has been burning cash nearly continuously since it was founded 15 years ago.

But Mr Trudeau's comments provoked a response from the United States president.

Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, suggested that Trump saw Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before the summit with Kim.

"Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on trade any more". Known for his hardline stance on China, Navarro said that while it is not the US' job to change other countries' behaviour, the Trump administration would "defend ourselves" against Chinese trade policies.

While foreign policy issues such as North Korea do not usually have much bearing on the polls, Mr Trump's outburst against Nato allies, the European Union and Canada appeared aimed at striking a chord with voters who support his America First agenda.

The Rust Belt has been one of the hardest regions hit because of USA free trade with Mexico.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said "we'll see" when asked about plans to impose tariffs on Chinese imports, as the USA prepares to reveal its list of final targets this week.

However, the office of the US Trade Representative has said the United States ran a US$8.4 billion trade surplus with Canada in 2017.
