Young girl temporarily paralyzed by tick bite, mom says

Mum's parasite warning after daughter was left unable to walk Mother warning others of dangers of ticks after daughter suffers tick paralysis

- A mother in Grenada, Mississippi, sent out a warning to parents on Facebook after her daughter ended up in the hospital after finding a tick on her head. Jessica Griffin said her daughter, Kailyn, woke up on June 6 and couldn't walk.

Once the tick was removed, Kailyn's symptoms subsided and she was "completely back to normal", her mom said.

Jessica's post on Facebook.

Thankfully, Kailyn "fully recovered" the next day, her mom said, and "hasn't slowed down since her feet hit that floor".

But human children are also susceptible due to their smaller body mass. Girls get tick paralysis more frequently because the ticks can easily hide in a mass of hair, according to the foundation.

"I was just thinking that her legs were asleep until I noticed that she couldn't hardly talk!" she wrote. Following a CT scan and blood tests, doctors diagnosed Kailyn with tick paralysis.

However, as she spent more time with her daughter, Griffin discovered some disturbing signs. PLEASE for the love of god check your kids for ticks!

Women and children are most at risk. We are being admitted to the hospital for observation and we're hoping her balance gets straightened out!

It is advised that the people should immediately seek medical assistance in case of a tick bite causing flu like condition or infection.

According to The Washington Post tick paralysis is rare in children, but when it does present is more common in little girls because ticks can easily hide in their hair. Paralysis sets in slowly, starting in the legs and spreading into upper body, stopping your breathing if left unchecked. Symptoms usually begin to show about 4 to 7 days after the tick starts feeding. If nothing is done, the toxin ultimately makes it impossible for a person to breathe, resulting in respiratory failure. The CDC says tick paralysis is caused by a toxin found in tick saliva, reports KABC.

The diagnosis was at first missed as doctors struggled to work out what was wrong with her.

"Scary is a understatement", Griffin said in a post on Facebook.

And last year, Amanda Lewis woke up and found that her 3-year-old daughter, Evelyn, couldn't stand no matter how hard the little girl tried, according to the La Grande Observer.
