Eddie Jones insists South Africa
used their "get out of jail card" at Ellis Park as England returned to their coastal base to lick their wounds.

Supporters leaned over the railings but the former Wallabies boss stood his ground for 10 to 15 seconds and engaged with his tormentors before being ushered away by players and staff. "Especially when they win", Jones said after the match.

Later, Jones attempted to play down what had happened, by joking: "I was just asking them where I could get a good bottle of Pinotage and I'm still waiting for the answer!" If someone can help me out, please help me out.

"People always ask me "what is your favourite field to play on" and obviously when I play for my union it is Newlands but for the Springboks it is Ellis Park". I might go back and see him later.

Kolisi, who captained the Boks for the first time, said: "I was very nervous as we didn't expect to have such a tough time early in the game, but we have guys who had been in situations like that before".

"If you saw today's performance I'd be excited", a jocular Jones told the post-match news conference after his side had contrived to let a 24-3 lead, after just 17 minutes, slip in an action-packed contest at the start of the three-test series.

The second-half was dominated by the Springboks whose customary physicality was matched by a cutting edged in attack overseen by De Klerk and Le Roux, but it was the boot of Handre Pollard that did most of the scoreboard damage through three penalties.

As the Springboks' first black Test captain in their 126-year history, the reign of Siya Kolisi got off to a scripted start, and the meaning of the occasion is not lost on Jones.

George Ford's shuttle ball put Daly in untouched in the 13th minute and then a skip pass to Farrell allowed the England captain to ease his way through a porous backline four minutes later.

On the half-hour mark Nkosi had a half-chance, the danger should have been averted but Daly made a mess of gathering Nkosi's grubber and the Sharks wing touched down.

The dream debut continued when he popped up on the opposite wing after a clever run from Le Roux created the space for fellow debutant Aphiwe Dyantyi to send him over.

Le Roux exploited a large hole in midfield before two penalties from Pollard opened up a five-point gap.

The loss was England's fifth in succession, including one at the hands of the Barbarians two weeks prior, coming on the back of Six Nations reverses to Scotland, France and Ireland.

Yet their advantage disappeared before the break, debutant winger Sibusiso Nkosi crossing twice as South Africa turned the game around to sit 29-27 in front at the break.
