White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has apologized for saying Justin Trudeau earned "a special place in hell" with his response to Donald Trump's complaints about US-Canada trade.

Yet even as it did so, some in this country were calling for major reforms to the very system of protections for Canada's dairy, egg and chicken farmers that first ignited - and has continued to sustain - Trump's anger: supply management. Trump refused to endorse the group's joint statement, said that Russian Federation should be readmitted, and traded barbs with Trudeau over an intensifying trade conflict.

"I actually like Justin", Trump said.

"I own that, that was my mistake, those were my words". We just shook hands.

But it was just days ago that trade tensions between the United States and its second-largest trading partner escalated following the G-7 meeting after Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau engaged in a public spat.

Mr Trump also commented at the news conference on the viral photo taken of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and others standing before him.

"That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada", Trump told reporters Tuesday in Singapore. "(Trudeau) learned. You can't do that.

It said Canada would "reject disparaging and ad hominem (personal attack) statements by usa officials which do a disservice to bilateral relations and work against efforts to resolve this trade dispute".

I trust a lot in the talent and mentality of this team and I am sure that they can go far and fight for the title. We will touch the staff as little as possible, as soon as we have something to communicate, we will do it.

Heyman added he's "of course ... embarrassed" about Trump's behavior during the G-7 meeting, arguing the United States "was doing everything it could do to disrupt this meeting".

They were also thankful for the trade we do with the USA, our military aid, the underground railroad, the refugee program, our inclusivity and, of course, hockey and Tim Hortons.

"It's very unfair to our farmers, and it's very unfair to the people of our country", he said. Trump's steel tariffs and threats to tax auto imports, among other protectionist policies, have strained relations with America's closest allies, including Canada, with whom the administration has been struggling to re-negotiate NAFTA.

For Trudeau, "there are fewer things he can get in exchange, there isn't money to splash around to get farmers who have a quota to give it up and this is an important issue in Quebec, which provides many seats for the Trudeau government". "He'll learn, he can't do that", Trump said. And in fact, despite Canada's tariff, the US runs a surplus in dairy trade with its northern neighbor.

Meanwhile, a senior aide to US President Donald Trump apologised on Tuesday for saying there was a "special place in hell" for Trudeau, following the acrimonious Group of Seven summit.

The World Trade Organization says Canadian dairy tariffs average almost 249 percent, compared with the United States' 17 percent. Chrystia Freeland, the Canadian foreign minister, called them "inappropriate" and warned that ad hominem attacks are not a productive way to conduct worldwide relations.

Trump's attacks arrive as the United States and Canada renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement alongside Mexico.
