The Red Cross is joining an worldwide movement, The Missing Types campaign to combat this trend.

"It is our family's privilege and honor every year to host the blood drive to remember and honor Vincent all the donors who gave Vincent blood so he could live long enough to meet our newborn son Jeremiah", Mindy Sue said in a video appeal on her Facebook page.

This theme emphasises "blood donation as an act of solidarity" with our fellow human beings, highlighting the fundamental values of empathy and kindness that underpin the selfless act of blood donation, according to the World Health Organisation. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

But during the summer months, when blood supply is at its lowest, it's up to the public to help families like the Vandermarks. A campaign, announced locally in Durham on Monday, aims to boost awareness of the need for willing donors by making the letters A, B and O vanish from places people visit on the web. Those letters designate the three main blood types, all in high demand during lifesaving medical procedures like transfusions. After individuals give blood, the Red Cross provides each donor their blood type.

US health officials say they need to collect more than 13 million blood units annually to meet patients' needs. This is only available for Whole Blood donors and additional information about this notification can be found in the app's Terms of Use.

Every two seconds, someone in the country needs blood. Donating blood is a simple process and only takes about an hour from start to finish.
