A magazine publisher has successfully appealed against the size of a record defamation payout awarded to actress Rebel Wilson in Australia.

The judgment, handed down by the Court of Appeal in Melbourne on Thursday, means the Pitch Perfect actress will receive about $3.9 million less than she had originally been awarded.

The jury had been asked to consider 40 questions and eight claims of defamation relating to a series of articles accusing Wilson of lying about her age, real name and childhood.

The suit was over a number articles, published in 2015, which made Wilson out to be a serial liar.

The Court of Appeal found there was no basis for Wilson to be awarded financial damages for the potential loss of roles, setting aside the economic damages entirely.

Wilson was not in court for the ruling in Melbourne this morning.

Speaking on behalf of Bauer Media, General Counsel, Adrian Goss, said in a statement: "It was important for us to revisit the award of damages".

The court set aside the decision to give Wilson around $3.9 million for economic losses, and reduced the $650,000 compensation figure awarded to the actor for non-economic loss by $50,000.

The actress she won her defamation case against Bauer Media in September previous year. Bauer Media immediately said it would appeal the record-breaking payment. It had been the largest defamation payout in Australian legal history, according to the Herald.

She would also like you to remember that she already won, okay?

The judge who determined the initial payout had relied on testimony from Wilson and two Hollywood agents that the articles, which were not published in the United States, still would have influenced movie industry decision makers, the appeals court judges added.

Wilson is overseas at the moment, so she has yet to comment on today's decision.
