Roger Federer followed up his return to the top of the ATP rankings with his third title of 2018 as he downed Milos Raonic in Stuttgart.

He will face Milos Raonic in the final on Sunday who had earlier beat defending champion Lucas Pouille.

Bidding for his 18th grass-court title, Federer was pushed all the way by the fourth-seeded Kyrgios, who had 23 aces.

The opening set was a tight affair without any breaks of serve, although Federer did earn two break points in the second and eighth games.

"The most important thing is going to be to focus on my game and if I can do my things well", Raonic told reporters after the match.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion had already secured his return to number one in the world rankings with victory over Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final. In a decisive tiebreak after no breaks in the second set, a double fault from Raonic paved the way for Federer, playing his first tournament in 11 weeks after giving the claycourt campaign a miss, to claim victory.

But speaking to Swiss newspaper Blick, Federer said any decision to stop playing will centre on his family as he revealed his regrets at being away from them for training sessions. Federer claimed his 21st win in 23 matches in 2018 and this was his 11th triumph against Raonic in 14 matches, the second in a row on grass after Wimbledon past year.

"So I'm very happy with myself and I hope I can continue to improve my level again tomorrow". The former world No. 3 has battled injuries at times over the last two seasons.

Entering the tournament, Raonic had been slipping in the ATP rankings, falling seven spots from 28th to 35th in the world.

"I'm really happy. I thought it was a good final from my side". "I've taken care of my serve".

"All of that has paid off in tiebreakers".
