McDonald's to replace plastic straws with paper ones from September

McDonald's will use paper straws in every restaurant in the UK The paper straw roll-out will begin in the UK and Ireland in September

McDonald's announced Friday that it will test alternatives to plastic straws in some US restaurants later this year.

Meanwhile, McDonald's says it will begin trials for non-plastic straws in select restaurants in the U.S., France and Norway.

The Chicago-based fast-food chain also said it was rolling out paper straws in all 1,361 restaurants in the United Kingdom and Ireland by next year, and will test other options in markets globally.

In April, the government proposed a ban on plastic straws and cotton buds in England.

"We want more companies to say no to unnecessary single use plastics".

"Our customers have told us that packaging waste is the top environmental issue they would like us to address", Francesca Debiase, McDonald's chief supply chain and sustainability officer said in a statement in January.

Neil Rankin has replaced plastic straws in his Temper restaurants with a variety made from corn starch and stopped using vacuum packing two years ago.

The big change has had the seal of approval from Michael Gove, Environment Secretary. But many businesses, including Waitrose, Costa Coffee, and Wagamama, have already started to take action. In addition to straws, a meal at a fast food restaurant might be served on a plastic plate, with a plastic top, with plastic utensils, wrapped in plastic.

It comes after worldwide consumer group SumOfUs launched a petition in January calling for a global ban on plastic straws across McDonald's estate.

Plastic straws enable many disabled people to drink independently, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson said.

Mr Naughten said McDonald's was "moving in the right direction by eliminating single-use plastics".

It argued that straws can be recycled together with cartons if they are pushed back into the box.

'The Government's ambitious plans, combined with strong customer opinion, has helped to accelerate the move away from plastic and I'm proud that we've been able to play our part in helping to achieve this societal change'.
