Phil Mickelson Took Advantage Of Risky Loophole With Double-Putt

Not exactly what you'd expect from one of the giants of the sport in the U.S. Open.

It was a shocking display on the 13th green at Shinnecock Hills on Saturday.

"During play of the 13th hole Phil Mickelson made a stroke on the putting green at the time his ball was moving", a USGA statement about the incident read. Commentators were in pure shock. He then marked. Missed his next putt and tapped in on his eighth stroke, but the two-shot penalty for hitting a moving ball turned the score into a 10. At that time, I just didn't feel like going back and forth.

Later, after acknowledging he was using Rule 14-5 to his advantage, Mickelson called USGA officials.

History suggests the 33-year-old is an odds-on favourite to become only the second player after Tiger Woods to win while ranked world number one, with five of the previous six players to hold a halfway lead of four shots or more going on to win. I took the 2-shot penalty and moved on.

"I don't mean disrespect by anybody", Mickelson told Fox. "But it was just a moment - I think it's just a moment of madness".

Antarctica has lost almost 3 trillion tonnes of ice since 1992
This could lead eventually to the collapse of the entire west Antarctic ice sheet, and around 3.5m of sea-level rise. As the ice sheet loses ice, its gravitational pull is reduced, so the local sea level near Antarctica is diminished.

"That's the most out-of-character I have ever seen Phil Mickelson", Azinger said.

Mickelson jogged after the ball after it curled around the hole, realizing it was about to head down the other side of the green.

"It's something you might see at your home course with your mates or something", Johnston said. I might have saved a shot doing it the way I did.

Instead, Mickelson made like Jesse Owens and in an astonishing snub of the dedication to honesty defining his legendary career, stopped a moving ball.

"I said 'That's one of the strangest things I've ever seen". Already completely out of the race, Mickelson melted down in a big way. And then you hit the next one and it almost goes off the green. But it's nothing disrespectful to me or to the U.S. Open or anything.
