Windies look to pocket series in second Test vs Sri Lanka

A Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) official told Cricbuzz that Mathews was forced to rush back home due to an urgent family matter.

Sri Lanka have been dealt two massive blows as all-rounder Angelo Mathews and pace bowler Lahiru Gamage have been ruled out for the rest of the ongoing tour of the West Indies.

Both players will arrive today (13). Danushka Gunathilaka and Dasun Shanaka have been named as replacements.

Trailing in the three-match series after losing the first Test in Trinidad by 226 runs, the Sri Lankans will be looking to first Test century-maker Kusal Mendis and captain Dinesh Chandimal to lead them out of trouble in the afternoon session.

Sri Lanka captain Chandimal elected to bat but was soon required to rescue his side from embarrassment as the host started strongly, his unbeaten knock of 119 restoring a measure of respectability after defeat in the first match.

It represented a significant reversal from his performance on the final day of the first Test four days earlier, when an ugly leave at off-spinner Roston Chase triggered Sri Lanka s second innings collapse. He has had an excellent beginning to Test cricket and will look to strengthen the top order on his return. He declared on 223 for seven, setting Sri Lanka 453 to win.

Ball changed! Sri Lanka refuses to field in protest
But even as the umpires made their way out to the middle, none of the Sri Lanka players joined them. The controversy comes at a time when SLC is under inexperienced and temporary leadership.

Man-of-the-Match was Shane Dowrich for his 125 not out in the first innings.

Openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Devon Smith then safely negotiated two overs before stumps, which the home side reached on 2-0.

The surprise element of the Windies line up has been their bowling.

Mendis, whose second innings 102 at the Queen's Park Oval retained a modicum of pride for the Sri Lankan batsmen in the first Test, joined Kusal Perera and the pair counter-attacked briefly with Perera striking Holder for three consecutive fours.

Chandimal's 119no defied a Windies attack spearheaded by Shannon Gabriel, who claimed 5-59 at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St Lucia, while Kemar Roach finished with 4-49.
