Woods looking for win, the final piece of his return to golf

"That's the flawless character for winning U.S. Opens, not reacting badly to anything and just growing off it rather than crumbling from it", says Byrne, whose celebrations 14 years ago amounted to a couple of cans of beer from a petrol station while stuck in traffic heading back into NY.

When Shinnecock hosted the last of its four U.S. Opens in 2004, a quiet South African named Retief Goosen shook off personal abuse like water off a duck's back to win his second title.

"There's two ways of looking at that: I've given myself a chance to win, which I didn't know if I was ever going to", he said.

SOUTHAMPTON, June 12 ― Phil Mickelson implored officials to ensure that Shinnecock Hills is presented fairly to all players at this week's US Open as he makes another attempt to complete the career grand slam.

"So I don't really want to try to win right now".

Mickelson is enjoying a fine season.

Because Shinnecock Hills is in a remote part of Long Island, there have been plenty of issues with heavy auto traffic.

Mickelson is quite familiar with U.S. Open struggles.

That could favour Hadwin, who took last week off to work on basics like set-up, alignment, ball position and posture. "I had just been given the OK to start walking again and to start moving around".

"What I did at Memorial, I didn't feel comfortable over [putts], didn't see my lines".

Simpson said because of his schedule he didn't get a chance to see Shinnecock Hills but will get his chances this week before Thursday's first round.

"I think that this year's US Open has the greatest setup going that I have seen in my 25 years of playing the US Open".

Next year, the U.S. Open returns to Pebble Beach, where Mickelson has won the PGA Tour event four times; and where he tied for fourth at the 2010 U.S. Open (he was tied for 16th there in 2000).

Rank, of Elmira, Ont., worked 73 games during the regular season and three playoff games in his second National Hockey League season.

He is a three-time Canadian Mid-Amateur Champion and represented Canada at the Pan-Am Games in 2015.

Hitting fairways and having a confident putter is a good combination at a U.S. Open.

"2018 has been pretty cool", he said.

"But, I mean, I would like to think I have an advantage if I drive it well, versus an average driving distance person".

It's been a year of learning Mackenzie Hughes, but the native of Dundas, Ont., he said he's hopeful his performance at the U.S. Open qualifier will be a springboard for success. With a prevailing wind into the players, and the deep bunkers around the green, it's likely a three-shot hole for everyone in the field.

The U.S. Open filled out its 156-man field Monday when two players, Emiliano Grillo and Byeong Hun An, were among the top 60 in the world ranking.

At 374 yards, the drive and pitch 13th only gave up 54 birdies last time around thanks to the few things that still give great players fits: few level stances, semi-obstructed views and another hard green. And D.J. won, so it's not like he didn't play well and didn't earn it or anything.

Shinnecock, on the narrow eastern part of Long Island, is accessible by only one road, but Woods will arrive from the east, against the worst of the traffic.

Toronto's Mark Hoffman and Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., will await their fate this week as both finished as first alternate at their qualifiers.

"It's great being here as it's back to being a pure US Open golf course with serious discipline in your iron play". Before that, there was one playoff in the previous 13 years combined.

"Two [holes] on Sunday", Spieth said confusingly.
