NBA could change draft eligibility rules by 2021

NBA Finals Golden State Warriors at Cleveland Cavaliers Report: Teams Sent Memo Saying NBA Draft Eligibility Rules Could Change in 2021
Sidney Guerrero | 18 June, 2018, 04:25

The NBA sent teams a memo on Friday saying that changes to draft eligibility rules could possibly be coming, according to ESPN. The league is now trying to figure out how the FBI's investigation into college basketball will play out while also trying to navigate the player development changes that would be needed for high school players to once again potentially enter the NBA.

The memo does not mention the one-and-done rule by name, but it is meant to remind teams the league and the players union could agree to scrap one-and-one before the expiration of the current collective bargaining deal in 2024.

Per Lowe, a change in the eligibility rules will lead to a loaded draft when it happens since it will include the top high school recruits of two consecutive classes in a single draft class.

Apple prohibits developers from using, selling users' Contacts
This crackdown could result in banning of Facebook's controversial Onavo Protect app - known for spying on user activities. Apps which describe or work as crypto miners in the background will be blocked from the Apple Store with immediate effect.

The memo does not specifically mention the "one-and-done" rule, according to Lowe, but that rule is at the heart of the issue. The days leading to the draft have always served as the peak time for rumors about teams trading future draft picks to swirl, and if anything with regards to eligibility rules is subject to change, it only seems prudent for the league to make sure every ball club is made aware of that. If the rules were to change, it would undoubtedly benefit smaller-sized college teams and help them compete with the Kentucky's of the World.

The memo says the National Basketball Association doesn't expect any changes to eligibility rules until at least 2021 and it does not specifically mention the one-and-done rule by name, according to ESPN's report. We'll have to see how elite high school prospects start potentially adjusting to reclassify while colleges also might have to adopt some new and unique recruiting strategies if they rely on one-and-done players to fill out their roster.
