An estimated 18 people had been rescued and one passenger was confirmed dead after the ferry sank on Monday evening. According to emergency services, a late-night rescue mission saved at least 18 people and one found dead. So far 49 people are confirmed missing, he said, based on reports from relatives.

A night-time search and rescue effort is underway after a ferry carrying about 80 passengers sank Monday in a popular lake on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, killing at least one person.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Twitter that initial estimates were that 80 people were on board but there was no passenger manifest and the number may range from 70 to 130.

A survivor identified by Indonesian television as Juwita Sumbayak said the vessel was rocked by high waves and was hit a by a wooden boat before suddenly sinking.

Lake Toba, a popular tourist destination promoted by the government, fills the caldera of a giant dormant volcano and is the largest lake in Indonesia and one of the deepest in the world.

The vessel overturned in Lake Toba in the province of North Sumatra, more than 1,300km (800 miles) north-west of the capital, Jakarta.

A rescue team from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) has also been deployed, Mr Maher said.

Ferry accidents are common in Indonesia, a vast archipelago, especially during the Islamic holiday of Eid when millions of people make the annual journey by land, sea, and air to their hometowns after the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
