'Canadians smuggle scuffed shoes out of USA to avoid tariffs'

Jean Garcia | 20 June, 2018, 03:24

"We can no longer be the stupid country", Trump said.

Speaking to the National Federation of Independent Business in D.C., Trump cited a story in a "major newspaper" about Canadians travelling to the United States and "smuggling things back in to Canada because the tariffs are so massive".

Trump has been taking potshots at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada since the end of the G7 summit earlier this month after the prime minister said at a press conference that he told the US president that his steel and aluminum tariffs were "kind of insulting", and that Canada "will not be pushed around" and that it would not hesitate to impose retaliatory measures.

Trump claimed that in order to avoid paying U.S. tariffs on goods, such as shoes, we are literally just wearing them across the border and passing them off as old.

"Canada, they like to talk", Trump said, likely referring to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

According to Trump Canadians "buy shoes and they wear 'em. They scuff 'em up to make 'em sound old, or look old". No, we're treated horribly'.

Trump said is was 'one of the worst deals ever made by this country.' He added: 'We're trying to equalize it. Many are reminding the President that we have our own shoe stores on this side of the border, while others are just making a big joke of the whole situation.
