Gonen Segev: former Israeli cabinet minister ‘spied for Iran’

Israel charges ex-minister Gonen Segev with spying for Iran Israel indicts former cabinet minister on Iran spying charges

According to the newspaper, Segeju was charged with espionage and collaboration with the enemy in time of war.

The Jerusalem Court indicted Segev on charges of aiding the enemy in wartime, spying and other offenses on Friday.

An investigation by Israel's internal security agency and the police discovered that Segev had been recruited by Iran and became an agent for its intelligence services, officials said.

He was subsequently arrested by Shin Bet upon entry to Israel, who have reportedly gathered information on Segev's communication with Iran.

In order to perform the missions that he had been assigned by his handlers, Segev maintained contacts with Israeli citizens in the foreign affairs and security fields.

"Even at this early stage, it is possible to say that the publication that was permitted makes things even more hard, even though from the indictment, whose full details remain confidential, a different picture emerges".

How noble, wanting to release a game in its entirety without fear of having to buy more to get the full story. As expected, a few interesting nuggets had surfaced during the chat.

While Israeli security officials do not think that Segev gave any sensitive and classified intelligence to Tehran, Lebanon's Al Akhbar reported that he provided Iran with "a variety of information that will serve it in the struggle against the Zionist entity".

The Shin Bet said Segev met with his operators twice in Iran, and also met with Iranian agents in hotels and apartments around the world. All further details pertaining to the case have been placed under gag order.

"Even at this early stage it can be said that the permitted publication attributes extreme gravity to the events, even though within the indictment, of which the full details remain confidential, a different picture is painted", said the lawyers' statement. In 2004, he was found guilty of attempting to smuggle thousands of ecstasy pills from Amsterdam to Israel, and served five years in prison with a plea bargain. He left no major political mark because his criminal activity in subsequent years overshadowed everything.

He was arrested on his arrival back in Israel on suspicion that he had been working as an Iranian intelligence operative. He was demobilized with the rank of captain, studied medicine at Ben Gurion University of the Negev, and was elected to the 13th Knesset in 1992.

Segev was energy minister for 18 months in the mid-1990s.
