Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu, was indicted for misusing state funds, Israel's Justice Ministry said Thursday.

The ministry said Sara Netanyahu was accused of falsely declaring there were no cooks available at the prime minister's official residence and ordering "hundreds of meals from outside caterers at public expense".

If convicted, she could face a maximum sentence of five years behind bars, though that seemed unlikely.

In September 2017, Israel's attorney general, Avichai Mandelblit, announced he was minded to file an indictment subject to a pre-indictment hearing, which took place in January. Other former employees have accused her of mistreatment, charges the Netanyahus have vehemently denied.

Benjamin Netanyahu has called the allegations against his wife absurd and unfounded.

In one case, he and family members are suspected of receiving one million shekels (US$285,000) worth of luxury cigars, champagne and jewellery from wealthy personalities in exchange for financial or personal favours.

In the case against Sara Netanyahu, which Israelis refer to as the "meals-ordering affair" the prime minister's wife and Saidoff allegedly falsified documents so that food from outside companies and private chefs could be used, even though there was a full-time chef employed at the residence.

He is also being investigated in Case 2000 for an alleged media bribery scheme to help the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper against its competitor Israel Hayom in return for favorable coverage of the premier.
