The man suspected of killing five people in a Maryland newsroom posted a barrage of hostile tweets over more than two years about the newspaper but law enforcement remained unaware of those posts until after the attack, the local police chief said on Friday.

As soon as news reports Thursday revealed that the newspaper was specifically targeted, a former coworker of the woman Ramos harassed said he immediately suspected the attacker's identity.

That was one of several details to emerge in a news conference on Thursday's shooting.

Ramos has not cooperated with authorities, police said. "I don't know why, but flight won".

She eventually went to police, and Ramos ended up pleading guilty to a misdemeanor harassment charge.

Because of the delay, police turned to facial recognition, the police chief said.

Wes Adams, the state's attorney for Anne Arundel County, told WTOP's Neal Augenstein that Ramos barricaded the back entrance before coming to the front entrance, shooting out the front window and shooting into the newsroom.

Italy's PM welcomes new European Union migration deal
Italy's new prime minister, Giuseppe Conte , put a positive spin on Thursday's meeting, saying, "Italy is not alone anymore". The second, he said, would be the deportation of those who are already in Europe but do not qualify as refugees.

But it is also unclear whether Trump's rhetoric and other verbal attacks on journalists by Trump's supporters - such as alt-right personality Milo Yiannopoulos who recently said that he "can't wait for vigilante squads to start gunning journalists down on sight", as USA Today reported - led Ramos to escalate from threats to deadly violence at the moment that he did.

Investigators said they have found evidence at Ramos' Laurel apartment, about a 30-minute drive from Annapolis.

Quietly clutching candles or hoisting #AnnapolisStrong signs, more than 1,000 people streamed through Maryland's capital. "This person was prepared to shoot people", Krampf said.

"For years Ramos stewed in his embitterment, over the newspaper's coverage of his unsuccessful defamation case and the newspaper's coverage of his stalking by Facebook of a woman with whom he had gone to high school".

President Donald Trump, often a harsh critic of the media, made a point Friday of addressing the "horrific shooting" which "shocked the conscience of our nation".

The alleged shooter, Jarrod Ramos, has been arrested and charged with five counts of first-degree murder. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has ordered the state flag to be lowered to half-staff until Monday in their memory.

A public defender represented Ramos during his bail hearing Friday morning. He added, "journalism is a noble profession upon which our democracy depends, and we will fight to defend it".

Tom Marquardt, the Capital Gazette's former editor and publisher, told CNN on Friday he was disappointed charges were not filed. A video shared by NBC News showed him silently walking past reporters as they shouted questions at him about the shooting. "My family and I have enjoyed special relationships with many great people who have worked for the newspaper", Belichick said.
