Hundreds of people gathered in First Ward Park on Saturday to protest the Trump administration's immigration policies that have led to the separation of thousands of children from their families at the southern USA border.

The order stopped children being taken from parents who face criminal prosecution as part of the president's policy of "zero tolerance" towards illegal crossings of the USA border from Mexico.

Demonstrators gather in Vancouver to oppose U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

An executive order issued by Trump this month reversed the policy, and the subsequent injunction in San Diego ordered the government to immediately stop separating parents and children and said families must be reunited in 30 days or less.

They are not confined to traditionally liberal bastions such as the big cities of NY and Los Angeles but are also being held in deeply conservative areas such as Appalachia and Wyoming.

"Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here", they chanted, also declaring a welcome for Muslims.

But the Trump administration points out that most of those migrants never showed up for court. The family-friendly rally will feature children's activities and youth speakers. Organizer Michelle Wentz says opposition to the Trump administration's "barbaric and inhumane" policy has seemed to transcend political lines.

Her case dates from before the practice of separating families intensified in May. In one tweet, he called the nation's immigration policies "the dumbest anywhere in the world", and insisted undocumented immigrants should swiftly be escorted out of the country when they try to enter illegally.

Uzziel, whose mother is a Mexican immigrant who became a citizen, said he feels compassion for the children caught up in the immigration process and puts the blame of this situation on their parents. One of the biggest protests is expected to take place in Washington D.C'.s Lafayette Square, directly across the street from the White House, with turnout expected to top 50,000 people.

At the protest in Halifax where dozens gathered, activist Masuma Khan, whose parents immigrated to Canada from Afghanistan decades ago, said the rally also reminds of Canada's troubled past with family separation.

Marchers took to city parks and downtown squares from ME to Florida to OR; in Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico; on the global bridge between El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico; even in Antler, North Dakota, population 27. At least one arrest was made in Columbus, Ohio, when protesters obstructed a downtown street.

In Boston, thousands of people were gearing up for two planned protests.

The rally there began with drums and a reminder that the stories of most people who live in this country began somewhere else. "I cried", said Adelmund, whose event drew about 125 people.

"If we can't come together under the idea of 'Kids shouldn't be taken from their parents, ' where are we?" he asked.

Keys was accompanied by her 7-year-old son. "We have to speak out now while we can, before we can't". They stacked their protest signs, written in English and Spanish, against its grand wooden doors.
