A system in the Atlantic has quickly developed into the second tropical storm of the 2018 hurricane season.
NWS forecasters said the system located about 350 miles off the Carolina coast is becoming better organized and could be declared a tropical depression late Friday, but the Carolinas will probably not feel any impacts over the weekend. The storm's maximum sustained winds are at 35 miles per hour with higher gusts. Some strengthening is forecast during the next several days, and the depression could become a tropical storm later Saturday night or on Sunday. Beryl is not expected to survive crossing the Lesser Antilles island chain.
A hurricane watch has been issued for the island of Barbados and a tropical storm watch has been posted for Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy. Dry air and fast upper-level winds should cause this storm to dissipate by early next week.
It has been a quiet season so far, with no storm activity since Subtropical Storm Alberto formed in May, ahead of the June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season.
Though the storm's intensity could still fluctuate unpredictably, its chances of regaining hurricane strength before reaching the Lesser Antilles, the arc of islands from the US Virgin Islands to Grenada, have dropped significantly, CNN meteorologists said.
The barrelling tropical storm caused more than £37million ($50million) in damage and claimed 12 lives as it moved up the United States coast in May. Maximum sustained winds are now 30 miles per hour.
Regardless if it develops, this area of low pressure will track west-northwest, north and then northeast away from the USA coastline into the weekend.
"Temperatures at the surface of the tropical Atlantic Ocean have become remarkably colder than normal", wrote Phil Klotzbach, a Capital Weather Gang contributor and the lead author of the Colorado State outlooks.
Beryl is now a tiny tropical storm with tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the centre, but if this system can maintain strong winds, tropical storm force winds could arrive somewhere in the Leeward or Windward Islands on Sunday morning or afternoon.
The storm should fall apart by the time it reaches the Lesser Antilles. Now it's July and we could have our next named storm.
