Japan on Friday executed the leader of the Supreme Truth cult who had masterminded the deadly sarin gas attacks on the Tokyo subway in 1995. It staged a series of crimes including simultaneous attacks on Tokyo's subway in March 1995 using sarin gas, a nerve gas originally used by the Nazis. Six other cult members remain on death row. Other members from bottom left to right, Yoshihiro Inoue, Tomomitsu Nimi, and Kiyohide Hayakawa. Asahara was executed at a Tokyo detention center, while the others were hanged at the same detention center as well as those in Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.

Japan's justice minister says she approved the executions of a cult leader and six of his followers because of the seriousness of their crimes and the pain they inflicted.

Therefore, with all legal appeals of other death row inmates being exhausted, then now is a time to close the book on this bad event while never forgetting. There are 117 convicts on death row. Some of those transferred were not among the seven hanged Friday.

They were criticized by rights group Amnesty International, which described the cult's acts as "despicable" but said "the death penalty is never the answer".

Kamikawa said that capital punishment is "unavoidable" for such heinous crimes.

That attack, which involved a refrigerator truck releasing the gas to be dispersed by the wind through a neighbourhood, failed to kill the judges but killed eight other people and injured hundreds.

Japan's Justice Ministry announced the executions of Asahara, 63, and his followers.

His trial - and appeals process - took years to complete, and gripped Japan, as police continued to seek other cult members linked to the Tokyo and Matsumoto attacks.

"The time has come".

Under intensifying scrutiny from the government, the cult plotted the larger sarin attack on the subways in Tokyo on March 20, 1995.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Suga said authorities are taking precautionary measures in case of any retaliation by his followers.

The group's founder, Shoko Asahara, also known as Chizuo Matsumoto, declared himself to be both Christ and the first "enlightened one" since Buddha.

Asahara had been on death row for masterminding a deadly 1995 Tokyo subway gas attack and other crimes. The death sentence against him was finalized in 2006.

Yuji Ogawara, who heads a lawyers' group against the death penalty at the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, said the executions do not bring closure to Aum's crimes.

With his shaggy hair and beard, the half-blind Asahara was the key figure in the stunningly random and lethal attack targeting Tokyo commuters.

The Public Security Intelligence Agency's analysis is that all three groups are still under the influence of Matsumoto and continue to have risky characteristics.

The annual number of those executed in Japan normally does not exceed 10.
