The tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued as Beryl "no longer poses a direct threat".

As a tropical storm, Chris has maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour with higher gusts, according to the National Weather Service. It has been a mostly stationary storm so far, sustaining maximum wind speeds close to 45 miles per hour, but is expected to remain "well offshore" of the US coast. Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy; Saba and St. Eustatius; and St. Maarten remain on a tropical storm watch.

Environment Canada issued a tropical cyclone information statement saying that Tropical Storm Chris is expected to move northeastward from Carolina and gain strength by Tuesday.

But the National Weather Service said Beryl remained on track to move south of the U.S. Virgin Islands and across western Puerto Rico on Monday, potentially bringing 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) of rain and gusty winds to the U.S. territory still recovering from the devastation wrought previous year by Hurricane Maria.

It is said Beryl will "degenerate into a trough of low pressure" as it moves into the eastern caribbean sea by Monday.

As some East Coast residents gear up for Tropical Storm Chris, New Englanders can rest easy knowing the storm will avoid the area, forecasters said.

The forecast predicts two to three inches of rain through Tuesday for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands.

Hurricane Beryl had been downgraded to a tropical storm by Sunday and was still on track toward Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean islands.
