When asked about his future following Belgium's last-gasp win over Japan on Monday night, he told the Spanish media, "Returning to Madrid?"

The 26-year-old is now preparing for Belgium's last-16 World Cup tie with Japan on Monday, but when asked about his future, told Sporza: "I have a certain preference, I already have ideas in my head, but I have moved everything until after the World Cup".

"I'm not going to talk about that now", Courtois, who has a year left on his Chelsea contract, said.

"My kids are the most important for me".

That sets up a mouthwatering clash with five-time world champions Brazil in the quarter-finals on Friday (7pm).

Chelsea are eyeing Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel as a potential replacement for Thibaut Courtois.

While he wants to sort out his future, the 26-year-old said the World Cup was his focus.

Thibaut Courtois and Alisson have been linked with high-profile moves away in recent months, with the Belgian believed to be on Paris Saint-Germain's radar and the Brazilian on Real Madrid's. "My children live in Madrid and for me it is important for them to be close to me so I want to do something to be able to see them more regularly".

Last season, the young shot-stopper was a non-playing substitute in the UEFA Youth League and EFL Trophy.

Courtois made 154 appearances for Chelsea, and has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
