"It's been interesting", she said. She was bitten on the wrist, and in true model fashion, she took pictures of the wound. "[The doctors] now believe that I still have pieces of the shark teeth in my arm and I will forever have a scar", she said, slightly concerned for her modeling career.

The 19-year-old college student was with her boyfriend and his family in the Bahamas at the time, when she realised she could get some great #content to show her then 13,000 followers.

"He didn't mean it: he's a wild animal, and I think anyone that goes and swims with nurse sharks needs to realise it is an uncontrollable situation". Her post about the incident was inundated with criticism.

"Against my boyfriend's wishes and his parents wishes".

Zarutskie has almost doubled her following on Instagram since her story came out; however, she has since made her account private, partly because she has "received a lot of rude and hateful comments from people that were saying ridiculous things", she told BBC.

When asked why she went ahead anyway, she replied, "It's just a once-in-a-lifetime experience".

Raised in Laguna Beach, California, Zarutskie said she grew up surfing and enjoying the beach.

The owner of Staniel Cay marina told NBC that the sharks are quite docile, but "can and do bite", especially if they mistake hands or fingers for a bit of tasty, tasty food. She also heard from locals that swimming with the nurse sharks was safe.

Katarina chose to swim with a herd of nurse sharks at Staniel Cay - but things went wrong when a 5-foot nurse shark bit her arm and started to drag her under the water.

But as she posed for a photo, a shark latched onto Zarutskie's arm.

Thankfully she was okay and just had to get stitches and antibiotics for her injuries, though she does still have some fragments of teeth left in the wounds. We're so glad she's okay.
