Merkel fires back after Trump says Germany is 'totally controlled' by Russian Federation

Steven Clarke | 11 July, 2018, 19:58

Schumer later tweeted that Trump's criticism of Germany before a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit on Wednesday was an "embarrassment" and a signal that he is more loyal to Putin than our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

The accusation of Russian influence may have been particularly biting to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who grew up in Communist-controlled East Germany.

'You tell me if that's appropriate because I think it's not.

Sitting at the table with the president were Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Chief of Staff John Kelly, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and NATO Ambassador Kay Bailey Hutchison, Trump defended his public reprimanding of allied countries over their defense spending.

The two leaders had a one-on-one meeting later on Wednesday, after which Trump claimed: "We have a tremendous relationship with Germany".

Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) issued a joint statement in response to comments Trump made at a breakfast meeting in Brussels in which he said he considered Germany to be "captive to Russia" because it is getting much of its energy from the nation.

He also criticized Germany for its use of Russian gas.

"They're delinquent, as far as I'm concerned, because the United States has had to pay for them", Trump added.

"Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don't have that many", he said. "This has been going on for decades, this has been brought up by other presidents, but other presidents never did anything about it because I don't think they understood or they just didn't want to get involved". So I think the secretary-general likes Trump.

Stoltenberg pushed back in the moment, but struck a more conciliatory tone in remarks after his breakfast with Trump (which, he joked, was "paid for by the United States").

"I'd like to see the businessman Donald Trump not only look at the balance sheet, but at the output", she said, adding that Germany contributed the second highest number of troops to the alliance and has been its second-largest net contributor.

"I just don't want us to be too friendly with them like he was with Kim Jong Un, although I supported that summit", Richardson said.

A year ago saw the biggest increase in defence spending in a generation, he said.

Trump will also have a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron Wednesday, though reporters will not be allowed to cover that meeting or the meeting with Merkel.

"Very bad thing for NATO", Mr. Trump said.

But the USA leader caught German defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen, off guard.

'We are protecting Germany, we are protecting France, we are protecting all of these countries and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russian Federation where they are paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russian Federation.

"I'm sorry, Germany is what please?", she said at a pre-summit conference in Brussels when a journalist asked for her reaction.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who meets Trump at the summit, has given political backing to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to import more gas, despite criticism from other European Union governments.
