Anderson will play 2016 runner-up Milos Raonic of Canada or American ninth seed John Isner tomorrow for a place in Sunday's final.

"Down two sets to love I tried my best to keep fighting.

From that standpoint, I felt great in practice, good in the warm-up", Federer said in his post-match press conference.

"I just kept telling myself to keep believing, and that today it would be my day".

"I feel like a lot of aspects of my game can give him a lot of trouble", Anderson said. That's the mindset you need against someone like Roger.

"It was just one of those days where you hope to get by somehow", Federer said. "Matches likes that are very special".

Earlier in the day, three-time champion Novak Djokovic reached his eighth Wimbledon semifinal with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Japan's Kei Nishikori in a stormy Centre Court clash.

In the 23rd game of the fifth set, Anderson finally broke Federer after the two held serve for nearly the entire set.

Maxwell later took to Twitter to clarify the incident, saying it was an "oversight" on his behalf. The players of both the teams gave an unbelievable performance.

But, turning 37 in less than a month, Federer refused to blame fatigue after giving up a two-set advantage for the first time since doing so seven years ago against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Novak Djokovic at consecutive slams at Wimbledon and the US Open. But on Monday, in his Wimbledon 2018 fourth round match against Adrian Mannarino, Federer tried his hand at a different sport altogether. "Knowing the four times they've played, Kevin hasn't got to him or seen any weaknesses from Federer, so that's a hurdle".

While top seed Federer was only at his scintillating best in the first set nothing could be taken away from Anderson, who will become the first male player representing South Africa to contest a Wimbledon semi-final since Kevin Curren in 1983.

The three-time Wimbledon champion was broken in the opening game of the fourth set, but won the next four games and broke again to clinch victory.

Despite his anger, Djokovic still reeled off 10 of the last 12 games of the quarter-final.

But he lost his rhythm at the start of the second set as Anderson made his move.

"If you go out there with doubts or unsure what's going to happen, like I maybe did a little bit in that first set, it's not going to go your way".

Switzerland's Roger Federer grimaces after losing a point during the fifth set of his men's quarterfinals match against Kevin Anderson of South Africa at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, in London, Wednesday July 11, 2018.
