See a glacier spawn an iceberg in this dramatic video

Elijah Vega | 11 July, 2018, 22:15

The video depicts Helheim Glacier and was shot by New York University's Denise Holland.

In April this year, New York University received a $2.1 million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to better understand Antarctic glaciers and the forces behind sea-level rise.

"Knowing how and in what ways icebergs calve is important for simulations because they ultimately determine global sea-level rise", Denise Holland, the logistics coordinator for NYU's Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and NYU Abu Dhabi's Center for Global Sea Level Change, said in a news release. This attracted a lot of attention to an extraordinary event, because such data was compared to the distance from the bottom to the middle of Manhattan in NY.

The process by which ice breaks away from a glacier is known as calving.

It broke off from Helheim Glacier in eastern Greenland on June 22 and captured by a team of scientists in real time. "And here we can see his wonderful significance", notes the study's lead author David Holland, Professor, Institute of mathematics NY.

What many business people are hoping of course, is that this sound and fury is just the start of another series of negotiations. Trade wars can draw blood in several ways. "You tax soybean exports at 25-percent, and you have serious damage to USA farmers".

Previously HB reported that an global group of scientists found that the rate of melting of the Antarctic sheets of ice has accelerated threefold in the last five years.

The massive new iceberg, which would stretch from lower Manhattan up to Midtown in New York City, can be instructive to scientists and policy makers who are studying the impact of human actions on global sea-level rise. However, this ice sheet is becoming small due to increased melting and warming temperatures in the region mean more loss of ice. This video captures data about calving events that can be used to better understand break-ups like these.

The vast piece of ice that breaks away is described as a tabular iceberg because it is wide and flat. Apart from the large chunk thin and tall icebergs known as pinnacle bergs also drift out to sea.

Denise Holland, a research team field manager with NYU, caught the eye-opening occurrence on video, which condenses 30 minutes of activity down to about 90 seconds.
