Michael Ondaatje's "The English Patient" was named the greatest-ever victor of the Man Booker Prize at an event Sunday celebrating five decades of the prestigious literary award. The five novels were then voted on by the public, which awarded the "Golden" Booker Prize to Ondaatje.

While Ondaatje's "English Patient" listed for the "90s, 'In a Free State by V.S. Naipul represented the '70s, 'Moon Tiger" by Penelope Lively stood for the '80s, Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall was selected for the 2000s, and last year's victor Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders was chosen for the ongoing '10s.

At Golden Man Booker Live, judge Kamila Shamsie discussed why she had chosen The English Patient as her victor of the 1990s, before an extract of the book was performed by actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Michael Ondaatje was presented with his golden trophy.

Accepting the award, Ondaatje said: "Not for a second do I believe this is the best book on the list - or any other list that could have been put together of Booker novels". In 1996, the Director Anthony Minghella took on the book of the same name the film; it played, in particular, rife Fiennes, Willem Dafoe and Colin Firth.

The victor of the special one-off competition held to mark the Man Booker Prize's 50th anniversary celebrations was chosen by the public.

It seems like the choice would be between declaring a national holiday and letting people skip work guilt-free or not declaring one and having the largest sick day in decades.

The English Patient is now judged as the best book of the last 50 years since its release.

"The English Patient is that rare novel which gets under your skin and insists you return to it time and again, always yielding a new surprise or delight", said Shamsie in a statement.

"Ondaatje's imagination acknowledges no borders as it moves between Cairo, Italy, India, England, Canada - and between deserts and villas and bomb craters".

Novelist Kamila Shamsie, the jurist who selected the English Patient as a Golden Booker finalist, called the novel "transformative".

The Golden Booker competition was held this year to mark the award's 50-year anniversary, with a panel of judges to mark a half-century of the prize. He is one of only two authors whose work has won the Booker Prize and an Oscar, and his latest novel, Warlight, has just been published by Jonathan Cape.
