Mr Wardle informed Apple about the bug and helped the company to fix it, which Apple noted in a security update in June and fixed on Tuesday.

The bug is specific enough to make anyone suspicious. He said his fix addressed code Apple added likely to appease the Chinese government; this is the code that caused crashes on certain iDevices when users typed the word Taiwan or received messages containing a Taiwanese flag emoji.

Apple's iOS is closed source, unlike Android. Eventually, the researcher was able to figure out that the bug was caused by iOS mishandling how it applied a filter based on location. Messages which were sent featuring the emoji included only a blank space.

The intended behavior of this code is not to crash your phone, obviously.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit: Trump says Germany is 'captive' to Russian Federation
And, dear Europe, spend more on your defence, because everyone respects an ally that is well-prepared and equipped. President Trump has often praised Vladimir Putin's leadership since the U.S.

But iPhone users still can't put Taiwanese flags into their texts, so it looks like Apple has bowed down to China and is adhering to the nation's censorship and seeming dislike of freedom of speech, which we reckon iPhone users wouldn't want having shelled out for a high-end smartphone. The bug affected nearly every messaging app including iMessage, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. Even receiving the Taiwanese flag emoji on a chat conversation caused messaging apps to crash. For US users plagued by the bug, they could at least temporarily stop the crashes by setting the phone's region to China and then immediately changing it back.

After losing mainland China to communist forces in 1949, the Republic of China relocated to Taiwan. China claims the country as its territory, but Taiwan claims it has the right to self-govern.

Since 2017, iOS tried to censor Taiwanese flag emoji when an iPhone was being used in China, making people in the country believe that Taiwan didn't exist at all. These restrictions drove Google to end its Chinese business operations a decade ago. Wardle reported the bug to Apple, which has finally issued a patch.
