He's the second senior minister to resign in the past 24 hours, the result of an internal power struggle over how Brexit negotiations should proceed.

The front page of the respected broadsheet Le Monde says Davis Davis "slams the door" behind him on his way out of the Cabinet and inside says his snub to May's Brexit plan "could not have been more violent".

Chief worldwide correspondent Phil Williams reports from London.

In comments likely to alarm Mrs May, Trump acknowledged the "turmoil" facing her government but said he was nevertheless looking forward to "an interesting time" when he visits the United Kingdom later this week.

More than 50,000 people have signed up to demonstrate in London on Friday when protesters intend to fly a large balloon over parliament portraying Trump as an orange, snarling baby although a counter-gathering to welcome him is also planned.

Mr Johnson's almost two years as foreign secretary was not without controversy, with the ambitious Tory heavyweight having been accused of undermining Mrs May on more than one occasion - and making headlines for other reasons.

"Perhaps, one side effect of my departure might be to put a little pressure on the government not to make any other concessions and I will keep arguing to say there is a better way to do it than this", Davis said.

"This policy will be bad for our country and bad for the party", said the Lewes MP.

May's supporters are now reported to be anxious that more ministers could go and a no-confidence vote could be triggered.

"Now is the time to rally behind the Prime Minister and give her our full and total support".

In addition to the prime minister's office, the three most critical cabinet positions - Treasury, the Foreign Office and the Home Office - are safely in the hands of those who voted to remain in the EU.

"We'll make everything possible".

Johnson reportedly compared the promotion of the plan to "polishing a turd".

Davis himself expressed regret that Johnson had quit, and said it would be "wrong" for his departure to trigger a major rebellion.

"Theresa May's Government is in meltdown", deputy leader of the Labour Party Tom Watson said.

With less than nine months until Britain is due to leave the bloc, May is sticking to her plan for a "business friendly" Brexit.

Former Ukip leader Nigel Farage welcomed Mr Johnson's decision on Twitter, saying: "Bravo Boris Johnson".

"Time for Michael Gove to decide".

Rees-Mogg made a call to arms for the Euroskeptics in his own party and across the country to reject the consensus achieved within the Cabinet.

But the leader of the Scottish Conservatives Ruth Davidson said Mrs May was "correct to accept the Foreign Secretary's resignation".

All we have asked from the Prime Minister, is that she sticks to what she has promised on repeated occasions, when she declared that "Brexit means Brexit" and pledged to take back control of our money, borders and laws.

Noting that the U.K.is in political turmoil before departing for Europe, President Trump failed to offer a word of encouragement in support of Theresa May, observing that her future was "up to the people".

Trump isn't expected to directly address Brexit, nor were he and Johnson scheduled to meet.
