"Yesterday I mentioned the real hero was Sam", said Mr Narongsak, referring to former Navy Seal Saman Kunan, 38, who passed out and died on July 6 while returning from the chamber where the boys were trapped.

The success was announced after the final batch of stranded footballers was evacuated safely to Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital.

Each member of the Wild Boars football team and their coach have been rescued after spending 17 days stuck in a complex cave system.

The complex, high-risk mission for global and Thai divers to guide the boys and coach through the cave's flooded and tight passageways had riveted people worldwide.

The last group of the 12 Thai boys and their coach were rescued from the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai, near the border of Myanmar on Tuesday night.

"The entire team, which went missing last month and was trapped in the cave for more than two weeks, was successfully extracted from the cave on Tuesday after multiple days of underwater rescue operations".

The flooded Tham Luang cave was treacherous and the mission was not without its tragedy, with former Thai Navy SEAL Samarn Kunun perishing while replenishing air canisters in the cave for divers last Friday.

The evacuation required that the stranded survivors not just trek but also dive through muddy floodwaters, negotiating submerged passages that narrowed to less than 40 centimetres wide.

Later this week, the Discovery Channel will be airing a one-hour documentary chronicling the team's weekslong ordeal: "Operation Thai Cave Rescue" premieres at 10 p.m. ET/PT on July 13.

The four boys rescued Sunday can eat normal food and walk around, and the four pulled out Monday were eating soft food.

Risks such as the boys' deteriorating physical condition and the possibility of life-saving equipment breaking down mid-mission made the rescue effort particularly risky, Hodges said. "When I visited them, I also told them to be good citizens".

Even the rescuers reacted with disbelief at the successful evacuation of all team members.

The youngest, 11, appeared asleep under a crisp white sheet.

After their evacuation, the medic and three Royal Thai Navy SEALs who had accompanied the stranded team then made their way out.

"I promise I will take care of the kids as best as I can", he wrote. They will remain in hospital in the nearby city of Chiang Rai for a week, followed by a week's recuperation at home.

The first video of the rescued Thai school boys have emerged since they were brought out of the cave.

A video of the rescue operation inside the cave was shown to the media during the press conference.

The complex mission for global and Thai divers to guide the boys and coach through the cave's flooded and tight passageways riveted people worldwide. However, doctors now treating the boys in a hospital have said it would be too soon for them to make the trip, and expected to keep the boys under observation for at least a week.
