Mr Chillal, 82, was flown to NY by the Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum in Times Square for a special event during which his fingernails were cut. "If I had chose to cut my nails, I would not have a Guinness World Records title now".

The Indian man who is the 2016 Guinness Book of World Records title holder for having the "Longest Fingernails on a Single Hand Ever" will finally be cutting his fingernails which he started growing in 1952.

He only grew the nails on his left hand, keeping his right hand trimmed.

"Ripley's is privileged to display this truly unique and one-of-a-kind exhibit".

Speaking through a museum interpreter he said: "I don't know if the teacher is dead now or not, but I would definitely like to say the thing that you scolded me for, I took it as a challenge". The teacher said that Mr Chillal would never understand the importance of what he had done because Mr Chillal had never committed to anything.

He only grew the nails on his left hand.

Despite Mr Chillal's fingernails causing him to lose function in his left hand due to their weight and length, and his fingers being permanently fused together, he went on work as a photographer for a government agricultural magazine for 22 years. "Chillal dedicated his life to something truly remarkable and Ripley's is the ideal home to honour his legacy".

Chillal, 82, recently retired his fingernails to Ripley's after growing them for 66 years. Times Square, according to a media advisory.

Mr Chillal's unusual choice didn't stop him from leading a normal life with his wife, two children and grandchildren. The 14-year-old then chose to take up a challenge to see how long he could go without trimming his nails. The historic surgical procedure, which took roughly 20 minutes to complete, took place at Ripley's Believe It or Not!
