De Blasio charged the letter was an attempt by the Trump administration to deflect criticism of the separation policy, which has since been altered. The mayors said Trump had failed to address a humanitarian crisis of his own making.

He decried the "broken, inhumane policy" during an unscheduled visit on 20 June to a New York City facility allegedly housing separated migrant children. He then went to Mexico to get a better view of the facility.

The mayor of New York City has denied a report that he and his security detail illegally crossed the US-Mexican border on a recent visit, a spokesman says.

According to the letter, a uniformed Border Patrol agent noticed a group on the Rio Grande River flood plain south of the Tornillo, Texas, Port of Entry, taking photos of the holding facility. The agent then asked them if they had been authorized to view the facility from that location.

A New York Police Department inspector with the group answered "no" and indicated that they had arrived from Mexico, according to the letter.

"The agent informed the group that they had illegally crossed the United States/Mexico Border at a place other than a designated port of entry and that this was a violation of federal law", the letter read. But the group disregarded the order and drove back to Mexico, according to the letter.

Border Patrol agents who were rescuing a distressed pregnant woman in Texas on Saturday were attacked by rocks thrown by illegal immigrants, officials said.

In a freakish incident, a 46-year-old homeless was arrested for stabbing a tourist with a pair of scissors using his feet. He and a female friend who was present said Mr Coronado asked Mr Crenshaw for directions and was attacked, police said.

De Blasio said the agents checked with their supervisor before allowing the officials' cars to exit and return via normal checkpoint.

"It's insane", de Blasio told reporters while standing outside the facility's gates.

De Blasio has been a frequent and vocal critic of the Trump administration, including the administration's immigration policies.

The government had been bound by court order to reunite children aged five and under by 10 July, but United States officials say that "legitimate, logistical impediments" are delaying reunions for numerous 102 children under five years old.

A spokesman for the Border Protection had no comment.

Agents with the Weslaco Station saw a group of people who had previously been unable to enter the USA climbing a tree to enter the country through Custom and Border Protection's (CBP) Port of Entry in Progreso, the agency said in a Wednesday news release.
