Taking Multivitamins Is a Waste of Time When It Comes to Heart Health, Study Suggests

In response, the Council on Responsible Nutrition, a supplement trade group, said, "multivitamins fill nutrient gaps in our less-than-perfect diets" and "are not meant to serve as magic bullets".
The meta-analysis included 18 studies published in 1970-2016 (11 from the USA, four from Europe, and three from Japan) with a total of more than 2 million participants from the general population.
They said the small number of studies that had established a link between multivitamin and mineral supplementation and a lower risk of coronary heart disease could be explained by the fact that people who take such supplements tend to have a healthier diet.
Researchers found no association between taking multivitamin and mineral supplements and a lower risk of death from cardiovascular diseases.
The question whether or not multivitamins prevent cardiovascular diseases has been under fire for many years- although a lot of well- researched studies have already reported that multivitamins aren't a great help- which is why the team chose to combine the results of previously published studies on the topic.
The new findings come on the heels of prior studies which showed that supplements have few, if any, health benefits. Neither group advises using these multivitamin and mineral supplements to prevent cardiovascular disease. Nor does it reduce the risk of early death from those or other forms of cardiovascular disease (conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels).
A strength of the new study is that it includes clinical trials, the findings of which are generally more reliable than population studies that rely heavily on data provided by participants, said Dr. Parag Joshi, a preventive cardiologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Engaging in daily physical activity, not smoking, and following a healthy diet are still among the best ways to lower heart disease risk, the researchers said.
"We undertook this analysis because, despite numerous studies strongly suggesting the neutral effect of MVM [multivitamin/mineral] supplements on CVD prevention, the controversy did not end, and the scientific community continued to send a confusing signal to the public", Kim's group said.
Kim hopes other doctors follow suit.
Multivitamins may not be as helpful as some believe and can potentially cause more harm than good.
Currently, there are no legal hurdles for the manufacturers of mineral and vitamins supplements to cross before they are sold to the general public, and at least 30 percent of the US population take multivitamins and mineral supplements, the authors noted.
