UPDATED 3:39 p.m. ET: John Schnatter has admitted that the report about the offensive and racist language he used on the Papa John's conference call is true. According to the report, a May conference call that addressed the manner in which Schnatter would distance himself from online racist groups, Schnatter complained that Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland Sanders used the "N" word in reference to African-Americans without scrutiny or effect.

"Regardless of the context, I apologise".

The call, which took place in May, was meant as a role-playing exercise to help Schnatter avoid future public relations messes like the one a year ago when he blamed the NFL's national anthem kneeling controversy for declining pizza sales.

David Grissom, the chairman of the university board, said he had spoken to Schnatter on Wednesday.

Papa John's International, Inc. announced Schnatter has resigned as chairman in a statement late Wednesday night. Schnatter's remark set of outrage all over social media and with several groups, including the NAACP calling for Schnatter to resign from the University of Louisville board prior to it happening. The call was meant to facilitate public relations strategies to avoid coming off as a racist, which Schnatter desperately needed after his criticism of kneeling National Football League players got him uplifted by white supremacists and booted as the company's CEO.

On Wednesday, Forbes issued a report that Schnatter used the word during a May marketing call with company executives and a marketing firm called Laundry Service. He added that the members of the board don't condone racism or "insensitive" language.

Thai official: Rescued boys generally healthy and smiling
All 12 boys trapped underground in Thailand have been rescued following the "largest, most complex cave rescue in history". Medical officials told reporters that they're healthy, fever-free, mentally fit and "seem to be in high spirits".

Sources told Forbes Schnatter had made the comments in a misguided attempt to show his aversion to racism but many on the call were left offended.

In a statement to BuzzFeed News, Schnatter confirmed he'd used the n-word and offered an apology.

Yum Brands Inc's Pizza Hut replaced Papa John's as NFL's sponsor in February, ending Papa John's eight-year relationship with the top USA football league.

Following the incident, Laundry Service said it held a call with the client's chief executive officer to discuss winding down the media agency's work with the company.

Papa John's has once again shot itself, blowing off its metaphorical foot.

Company shares fell as much as 5.9 per cent on Wednesday to US$47.80 near midday, the lowest intraday level since February 2016.
