Later, upon request, he provided the firm with his ID, copies of her death certificate, and her will.

Per the BBC, after 37-year-old United Kingdom woman Lindsay Durdle died of breast cancer that had spread to her lungs and brain on May 31st, 2018, her husband Howard Durdle says he provided Paypal with documentation including "her death certificate, her will and his ID, as requested".

As for the debt, it has been written off and won't have to be paid.

PayPal's letter stated that the Lindsay owed the company 3,240.72 pounds, payable by July 20, as she had breached PayPal Credit conditions as she had passed away.

"Excuse the language but this is beyond the f**king pale". Taking care of Mrs. Durdle's debt - a little over $4K - is the least the company could do.

Although there have been many automated letters or bills generated in the past that have caused confusion or upset, this one was slightly different because this wasn't a bill, it was a full threatening letter where the recipient was actually dead.

According to Mr. Durdle, PayPal let him know there were three possibilities in play with how something like this could have happened - a bug, a bad letter template, or human error, though to think a human could have looked at the situation and thought sending this was still a good idea is a bit disconcerting.

PayPal - which is owned by eBay - has admitted the automated letter addressed to Lindsay Durdle of West Berkshire, England, was "insensitive", the BBC reports.

'As soon as we became aware of this mistake, we contacted Mr Durdle directly to offer our support, cleared the outstanding debt and closed down his wife's account as he requested.

"We apologize to Mr. Durdle for the distress this letter has caused", the PayPal spokesman said, according to BBC.

Mr Durdle said he wanted to use "this kind of insensitive thing" as an example of how companies should not treat customers, especially those grieving.

This photo of Lindsay and Howard Durdle was taken past year.

"I just hope more [organisations] can apply empathy and common sense to avoid hurting the recently bereaved", he added on Twitter.

Lindsay Durdle died on May 31, succumbing to cancer.

"I'm a member of the charity Widowed and Young, and I've seen first-hand in there how a letter like this or something like it can completely derail somebody", he said.
