Trump says United States had opposed formula limits, not breastfeeding

Why are we talking about this?

"Ecuador always endorsed all resolutions on breastfeeding that have been adopted in the past in the framework of the World Health Organization (WHO), the last, last month of May, was approved by consensus and had the support of the delegation Ecuadorian meeting".

According to a report by The New York Times however, the United States delegation attempted to upend deliberations in an effort to protect the financial interests of baby formula manufacturers.

Ecuador's introduction of the breastfeeding resolution held that "mother's milk is healthiest for children and countries should strive to limit the inaccurate or misleading marketing of breast milk substitutes", as The Times reported.

Meanwhile, reactions have been rolling in on Twitter since The New York Times report was released on Sunday, mostly criticizing the Trump administration for selling out to corporate interest. "Many women need this option because of malnutrition and poverty", Trump said.

Did the infant-formula industry, which obviously benefits when women don't breastfeed, push the Trump administration to to take its mind-bending stand against encouraging breastfeeding?

The Trump administration appeared to side with companies manufacturing infant formulas whose sales are threatened by women breastfeeding their newborns. In those extreme cases, access to formula should be provided.

The resolution is backed by more than 40 years of research showing the benefits of breastmilk for newborns and mothers, especially when compared with breastmilk substitutes. It can also help maternal health.

The alliance lists the U.S.as spending an estimated 3.5 percent of its GDP on its military budget this year. Mr Trump earlier claimed that Germany was "captive to Russia" .

Health experts said the president's stance suggested a lack of knowledge about the issues. The U.S. was originally expected to support the movement. Formula makers have turned their attention to marketing their products in developing countries in recent years, as breastfeeding has grown more popular in wealthy nations. "There are things we should do because they're right thing to do, not because we get something out of it, and this [promoting breast feeding] is the right thing to do", he said. A decade later, that number rose to 81 percent of American women.

Even in case of orphaned babies, Arts says it is better to encourage wet nursing before resorting to formula.

The Times says it spoke with more than a dozen participants at the assembly from several countries.

Breast milk is linked to lower risks for children for everything from neurological development problems to diabetes. Three states - Vermont, Washington and Tennessee - slipped slightly.

"The issues being debated were not about whether one supports breastfeeding", she said. The Ecuadorian delegates acquiesced, and health advocates struggled to find another sponsor for the resolution. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusively breastfeeding babies until they are six months old, and continuing partial breastfeeding for the first year. "What's in human milk is genetically specific for its own infant".

Some places in the USA have spearheaded their own efforts to improve breastfeeding rates.

The United States tried to stop a pro-breastfeeding resolution at the United Nations, but ultimately failed.
