US President Donald Trump has raised the stakes for his European allies' defence spending from 2% to 4% of GDP, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev told a small group of Bulgarian journalists at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit on Wednesday (11 July).

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted Wednesday that member countries have already been increasing their defense spending.

Trump has berated members of the alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defense, accusing Europe of freeloading off the USA and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defense if they were attacked.

Praising new initiatives to build capacity, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg estimated that as much as 266 billion additional US dollars would be spent by European allies and Canada on defense by 2024.

Two NATO sources said, however, that Trump had not issued a threat to pull the United States out of the alliance that it helped found to keep the peace in Europe after World War Two. Also present was France's President Emmanuel Macron, who tried this year to charm Mr Trump into more harmonious transatlantic relationship, only to see the USA president withdraw from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and impose tariffs on European goods.

Mr Trump also spent time with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has recently been reelected and gained new powers as his country's executive president. 'When Germany and the rest of Europe don't have to spend enough on defense, and we have to as taxpayers carry that burden they're able to invest more in their private sector economy, grow their own economy at our expense, ' he said.

"Everyone in the room thanked me", he said.

Setting the tone for the summit's first day, President Trump made waves Wednesday morning at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg when he accused Germany of being under the sway of Russian interests.

"We have a very, very good relationship with the chancellor".

He complained the United States "pays tens of Billions of Dollars too much to subsidize Europe" and demanded that member nations meet their pledge to spend 2 percent of GDP on defense, which "must ultimately go to 4%!"

Asked about Trump's suggestion, Stoltenberg said he'll focus on what's been agreed to.

"I myself lived through a part of Germany being controlled by the Soviet Union".

United States officials have told Reuters that Washington is preparing another review of strategy, a year after Trump begrudgingly agreed to extend involvement in the 17-year-old war.

He continued: "Nato is much stronger than it was two days ago".

Trump has spent weeks berating members of the alliance for failing to spend enough of their money on defence, accusing Europe of freeloading off the US and raising doubts about whether he would come to members' defence if they were ever attacked.
