Trump's United Kingdom visit has high potential for embarrassment

Steven Clarke | 12 July, 2018, 18:25

Donald Trump has raised doubts over the UK's handling of the Brexit negotiations suggesting the Prime Minister was not delivering what the people had voted for in the European Union referendum.

It has been dubbed Storm Trump and the country is braced for a United States presidential visit that has split opinion like never before.

"I've always liked writing amusing songs and he just lends himself to them".

Asked about his views on the UK's plans for Brexit, Trump said: 'I would say Brexit is Brexit.

'I'd like to see them be able to work it out so it could go quickly, ' he said.

"I would say Brexit is Brexit, the people wanted to break it up so I would imagine this is what they will do".

May is trying to unify her deeply divided Conservative Party behind her Brexit plans with some of her own lawmakers openly speaking of a leadership challenge.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who signed off on the so-called "baby Trump" blimp, defended the decision Thursday, arguing the protests were not anti-American but emblematic of free speech.

Despite the demonstrations, Mr Smyth said there would be plenty of food, music and fun at the Trump Arms during the President's United Kingdom visit, "and hopefully no grief".

He then set the tone for the day with a blistering attack on key ally Germany at a breakfast meeting with Nato's Stoltenberg. And it comes just days before Trump sits down with Putin at the conclusion of his closely watched European trip.

"I am very strong with immigration, is a very important thing".

Then on Monday, he will be off to Helsinki to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to march through London in protest against Mr Trump's visit and some of his actions during his first 18 months in power.

The US president's brash style and hardline "America First" policies have caused consternation across Britain's political spectrum and society.

During this visit, Mr Trump will go to Oxfordshire for a lavish black-tie dinner.

The state visit has never been scheduled - there is fierce opposition to it in many quarters of Britain - and this trip is part of a working visit instead, meaning, among other things, that Trump will overnight at Winfield House, the USA ambassador's handsome residence near Regents Park rather than in Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle as a guest of the queen.

A high fence has been erected around the United States ambassador's central London residence where Trump will spend Thursday night and the embassy has sent out an alert warning Americans in London to keep a low profile in case protests turn violent.

Churchill spent three weeks at the White House, cementing his close ties with Roosevelt and forming the basis for future relations between the USA and Great Britain.
