Woman accidentally stole vehicle, kept it for two weeks

Steven Clarke | 12 July, 2018, 00:27

She climbed in the unlocked auto, pushed the start button and drove home.

Police say the woman initially rented a black sedan from Enterprise in Cornwall in June.

And so began the sleuthing, as the vehicle rental manager and the embarrassed renter started retracing her steps, beginning in the Walmart parking lot.

After leaving the store, the woman got into a vehicle that resembled her new rental, however she got into a 2015 black Infiniti QX50.

Both vehicles used a keyless entry remote, similar to this one.

Though police say there was a "happy and amusing ending to this story", they say it serves as a flawless reminder not to leave key fobs in unattended vehicles.

The woman then proceeded to drive the vehicle around for a full two weeks, using the Infiniti for her regular activities.

Together, they returned to the Walmart she had visited shortly after making the rental.

As Caroline mentioned she has the Love Island villa to keep her busy and we 'll just have to wait and see what Andrew does next. I've never had that before - with anyone. "And, to be honest, I wasn't sure I had room in my life for anyone new".

The first clue something was wrong came when she went to return the auto to the rental agency.

"In conversation with the manager of that establishment it came out that he was the owner of a black Infiniti that was recently stolen", MacKay said.

The woman - who police described as being "confused and a wee bit embarrassed herself" - contacted police, explaining that she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks. That's when the manager connected the dots and realized the vehicle she had returned belonged to an older gentleman who, 2 weeks earlier, had come in to rent a auto after his had been stolen - you guessed it - from the Walmart parking lot.

At first, he tried to tell her that the company didn't even rent that model - but she was having none of it. The owner said he had ducked into Walmart and returned to find his auto missing from the parking lot, according to police. The keys the woman had returned belonged to an Infiniti vehicle, not the Nissan she had rented.

And that's not even where the story ends. "And she was giving the manager the business on renting her a dirty vehicle", MacKay said.

The man, who had reported his auto stolen, had his vehicle returned to him. She also said there were papers in the glove compartment and a dirty ashtray, but it still wasn't enough to tip her off.

The manager called the cops, but MacKay refused to arrest the woman.
