Despite a solid performance by Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari, spearheaded by Sebastian Vettel, came out on top during the British Grand Prix.

Nico Hulkenberg was seventh for Renault ahead of Esteban Ocon and his Force India teammate Sergio Perez with Monegasque Charles Leclerc taking 10th for Sauber.

Hamilton afforded Raikkonen space at the right-handed third turn during the frenetic Silverstone race, but the Finn locked up, before his left-front tyre thudded into the right-rear of Hamilton's Mercedes.

The Ferrari driver had two penalty points applied to his superlicence in addition to the in-race time penalty.

Hamilton lost his championship lead to Ferrari rival Sebastian Vettel due to not finishing in Austria.

Responding to Hamilton's remarks, Vettel said: "It's quite silly to think anything that happened was deliberate". Bottas had a lead to defend, Hamilton was running third, Vettel the red meat in the Mercedes sandwich.

Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean gave Haas best-of-the-rest honours in qualifying for the second consecutive race by locking out the fourth row.

The race had shortened to an 11-lap sprint, 11 laps for Bottas to keep Vettel in his mirrors and Hamilton to keep Raikkonen, who went past Max Verstappen's fading Red Bull around Stowe, off his tail.

He was soon up to 16th and by lap nine he was eighth, but some distance from Vettel, who led Bottas by six seconds on lap 12.

The Finn was unable to keep Vettel at bay as the four-time champ used his fresher tyres to sweep into the lead but Hamilton also overtook Bottas easily to take the chequered flag just a couple of seconds behind.

"The safety auto spiced it up", said Vettel, wearing supporting tapes on his stiff neck. "I will not give up". "I deserved it", he said.

Raikkonen was at fault for the coming together and the stewards concurred as they slapped the Ferrari driver with a 10-second penalty.

Later asked if he was "comfortable" with the incident, Wolff replied: "I'm not comfortable at all with the incident because it's tiresome to be taken out in the first lap".

The German finished 2.264 seconds ahead of Hamilton for his fourth win of the season, denying Hamilton what would have been a fifth straight win in his home race. We knew a one-stop was not going to be easy, but we made a decision to take the risk. "But doing the opposite was the choice we went for and at the end it brought us a P2 and P4 and I think considering how the race started, we need to accept the result as an acceptable outcome with real damage limitation".
