Couple consider divorce to pay for sick daughter's medical costs

The couple said their divorce is the only way to get healthcare for their daughter who is disabled.

With not enough money to provide good treatment for their daughter, the couple is planning on a divorce, as that would Jake's wife Maria eligible for Medicaid.

Maria and Jake Grey, who reside in Sanger along with their two daughters, Brighton, six, and Fairen, two, say their eldest suffers a genetic chromosomal disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome and requires around-the-clock care. Even with health insurance, the family spends $15,000 per year out of pocket. Mr. That's more than 30 percent of their annual income. "I used to get anxiety just opening the mail because I was scared of what would come or what bill would come or what denial would come", Maria said, via KREM.

The couple has tried to get Medicaid to help with spiraling medical costs but Jake earns too much - $40,000 - for the family to qualify. "It would be divorce".

The family has applied for state assistance, but there are tens of thousands of people on the waiting list, some waiting up to 14 years.

"We just have struggled and struggled with it".

He also said that he created a Kobe mural a few years ago, but "people were very quick to forget that one". However, there was also a vocal minority (read: Kobe fans) who were upset by the sentiment.

Describing the situation his family finds itself in as "morally wrong", he added, "For someone to kind of make you choose between your marriage and your child is just-it's just a really weird spot to be in".

It was nine years ago they took their wedding vows on a handsome Florida beach.

Maria Grey said caring for Brighton was a blessing in many ways, but in others, it amounts to a major cause of financial and psychological stress. The couple fears they have no choice. Perhaps the Greys could live in a country which recognizes health care as a fundamental right, and which provides access to medicine and care while allowing the two to remain married.

For the Greys, the meaning behind their vows has only gotten stronger with every passing year. "I need the state to step up and give us the benefits that we need".

They just never imagined that could mean a divorce.

"She is a pure and attractive soul", Maria said.
